The Department of Children and Families recently welcomed 21 members as the sixth class of the Florida Youth Leadership Academy. Among the new members is Trenton Miller, a 17 year old young man from Brevard’s own Crosswinds Independent Living Youth program.
Trenton was selected out of 64 youth from across the state who were nominated for the program. The kickoff event was held in February, culminating with the election of officers for the Leadership Class. Trenton was selected by his peers to be Vice President. Without hesitation, Trenton eagerly assumed this role. As leader of his Jr. ROTC class at Rockledge High School, he is confident he has the skills and capability to be a successful leader. In addition to attending high school, Trenton is also taking 2 classes at Brevard Community College, works at two jobs, is a mentor in the Big Brothers program, and completes numerous community service hours.
Academically, Trenton is likely to be valdictorian or salutatorian next year when he graduates. On his own,Trenton recently purchased a moped scooter to ensure he has transportation to fulfill the many responsibilities he has assumed. Trenton’s future plans include college to major in criminal justice or entering the military.
Also shown in the picture is Diane Arnold and Tianna. Tianna, a 17-year-old from Orlando was elected by her peers to serve as class president. “I wanted to run as president because I have been captain of my basketball team for two years and feel I will be a great leader for foster youth in this program. I want to build my experience up to be a better leader in the long run and maybe even run as senator.”
Diane is currently mentoring both Trenton and Tianna through the Leadership Class.
