July is National “Make a Difference for Children Month”. Many of us look back on the adults that made a difference in our life; those who challenged and inspired us and those who were there to support us through the more challenging times; teachers, family members, coaches, clergy, neighbors, family friends, etc.
There is no greater need in life than to belong, to be connected, and know that our life matters and has a meaning and purpose.
Many hours are spent each day, week, month, and year investing time and resources in many things. There is no greater investment to be made than in a child’s life to help shape, direct, guide, lead and inspire their life’s direction.
In the social service field, children and families are often seen during one of the lowest times in their life; and while a great deal of investment is made to impart hope and facilitate healing, those who work alongside children, youth and families in crisis do not always have the privilege to observe and experience the positive results from their investment. This can be disheartening. For this reason, BFP has placed a focus on positive youth development through the Brevard Youth Thrive Initiative where during the Annual Youth Thrive Summit, child welfare professionals come together to hear stories of former foster youth who have grown up to be successful in spite of life’s challenges.
During Make a Difference for Children month, you have the opportunity to be that person a child looks back on and remembers made a difference in their life. It is also a time to recognize those among us who go above and beyond each and every day to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Brevard’s children. In this month’s newsletter, we have highlighted a few of the many outstanding child advocates in our community who tirelessly invest in our children and families.
Thank you for being an integral part of Brevard’s System of Care. In closing, I would like to leave you with a Poem that speaks to the impact our words, time and investment can have on a child.
Poem I got 2 A’s….
“I got two A’s,”the small boy cried, His voice filled with glee. His father bluntly asked, Why didn’t you get three?”
“Mom. I’ve got the dishes done!” The girl called from the door. Her mother very calmly said, “Did you sweep the floor?”
“I’ve mowed the grass,” the tall boy said, “And put the mower away!” His father asked him with a shrug, “Did you clean off the clay?
The children in the house next door Seem happy and content. The same things happened over there But this is how it went. “I got two A’s” the small boy cried, His voice filled with glee. His father proudly said, “That’s great! I’m glad you live with me!”
“Mom, I’ve got the dishes done!” The girl called from the door. Her mother called and softly said, “Each day I love you more.”
“I’ve mowed the grass,” the tall boy said, “And put the mower away!” His father answered with much joy, “You’ve made my happy day!”
Children deserve a little praise For tasks their asked to do. If they are to lead a happy life, So much depends on you.
